Caitalin's Ace in the Whole (Ultimate)

I have a recording of a Game, She uses her ultimate (Red Line, Red Target over a champion), That champion dies just before she fires her shot... about 10 seconds later She uses it again...

Does the skill only go on cooldown if the skill fire's, or does it happen if the channeling has been started?
