Hi peeps,

My mate said there's something wrong with this PC. I currently can't get time to look at the issue for at least 2 weeks, but I have an idea of what it is.

Usually on every other boot up of his PC, a very loud noise starts as well. Originally I suggested a fan problem.

But A) Why would it not happen all of the time? And B) He sent me a sound clip and it doesn't sound very fan like, so I'm now leaning more towards his HDD

If I attach the clip here after I finish work would anybody be able to confirm this? That why I can get him to get a new HDD by the time I'm able to get to sorting it out

Thanks.

Could be that the fan is catching on something, hence why it's not happening all the time.

Could also be the HDD, but it's going to be hard to tell from a sketchy sound clip - But worth a try.

The sound clip is very clear (Currently have it on my phone)

Personally I've had fan issues, and it simply doesn't sound like a fan problem...more like a motor issue I guess

Oh and he also mentioned its from the front of his towers, and his fans are on the sides and back

could it be due to temperature change on a metalic case?

My monitors "snap" when going hot to cold due to material expansion..

really just guessing until you can upload the sound.

It's during boot though, so doubt it would generate that heat

There's only so many moving parts in a PC, tell him to put his ear near them and say which is loudest.

Unplug any disc drives.

That's not the HDD, usually makes more of a clicking noise from experience.

Will be a fan, could even be the CPU heatsink fan

Sounds like a fan. Mine also started doing the same thing on bootup a little while ago. It has since stopped though.

Some motherboards have their own small fan too. Could be that.
One went on mine a while ago and had an intermittent screech.
It's harmless until it stops completely. That's when you'll need to worry and get it replaced !
