SONY PLANS EXPLOSIVE NEW ONLINE EXPERIENCE

New action MMOG planned for 2006, and PSP to herald a new era of online gaming

17:37 Sony Online Entertainment has revealed plans to aggressively attack the MMO market with a brand new action-based online game and massively multiplayer PSP experiences.

Having already made waves with MMORPG EverQuest and the best-selling PSP game Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, Sony Online sees MMOGs as a hugely important area of gaming in the future - possibly pointing to online functionality as a vital piece of the PS3 puzzle.

Speaking to CNN Money, SOE president John Smedley spoke of plans for a new action-based online game that would ignore EverQuest's beardy swords-and-sorcery approach for a more explosive experience.

The new MMO is scheduled for an unveiling at next year's E3, but Smedley was cagey about giving away too many details. "We know what we're doing now and we're going to take it to the next level," he said.

SOE is behind PlanetSide, the massively multiplayer FPS that caused loads of noise pre-release but failed to find popularity on the scale of EverQuest within the online community. It's thought that this new action game would learn from PlanetSide's mistakes and could even be a next-generation console title.

"We're branching out into a multi-platform arena. I think there's enormous potential in the console space," said Smedley, suggesting that SOE's upcoming MMOGs could be playable across PC, PS3 and PSP.

In fact, Smedley went on to discuss plans for PSP online gaming that go far beyond the wireless link-ups and hotspot fun we're just getting used to. He foresees a time in the near future where, if you're in range of an internet hotspot with your PSP, you'll be able to instantly nip into an MMOG and play for as long as you want. No passwords, no log-ons, and no subs fee (it would be replaced by ads, apparently) - just instant online enjoyment.

Finally, Smedley addressed the MMORPG threat coming from Blizzard's awesome World of Warcraft. While WoW's popularity does concern him, he was quick to point out that SOE is "still very strong and remains the market leader."
