Hi i have been looking about for months to find the best CPU / MBoard / RAM setup to overclock, Can you give me your thoughts on what parts you think are best to use and a rough price of the setup, Was looking at the AMD 64 3700+ ( some people say they can reach 3.0GHZ ) or the 3500+ ( Can reach 2.8GHZ supposedly ), Alough i havent decided if its better getting Socket 939 or Socket AMD 2 yet either, can i have your thoughts on this aswell, OR getting the AMD 64 3800+ X2 in Socket 939 or AM2, ( supposedly they can be clocked to 2.7GHZ per core ), just wondering what you's think would be the best setup to get, im looking to spend as less as possible ( reason why im overclocking ) but i would like a quite a good CPU speed. Also what RAM do you suggest using while overclocking, i was looking a Corsair XMS3200C2PT TwinX.

All in all these are the prices i found:

CPU -

Amd 3500+ (Socket AM2) £70.44 (939) £64.57
Amd 3700+ (Socket 939) £91.59
Amd 3800+ (Socket AM2) £82.19
Amd 3800+ X2 ( Socket AM2 ) £105.69 (Socket 939) £108.04

RAM -

Corsair XMS3200C2PT TwinX - £76.32
Corsair XMS32000C2 Pro TwinX - £93.94

GFX -

ATI X1900 GT ICEQ 3 - £187.00

Just looking to see if anyone can put a system together from that, only looking for CPU/RAM/MotherBoard/GFX/Cooler set up. And maybe find a cheaper price, but if you could rattle one together that will overclock nicely then that will sort me :)

cheers Sic.

Cheers.

The CPUs your considering are accross different sockets, remember that 939 is DDR1 and AM2 is DDR2.
At least consider a Conroe system, you'll get the most bang-for-buck from one of those beasties and apparently they'll clock nicely too.
Be careful when you see what CPUs 'can' reach when they overclock, it depends specifically on the individual CPU and cooling solution used - to reach the top bracket you'll need water cooling at least.

Websites to consider if your in the UK:

For the Core 2 Duo systems (Conroe)

Aye i know that they are diff sockets, i was asking what one you think was best, + i said MBoard/CPU/RAM And cooler so i can get the best setup possible, and no i dont buy anythin INTEL related:P personal problem with them haha, so what ya think would be a setup with the CPU's i said, just looking for a good overclocker basicaly. Im not looking for something mega based CPU power, im looking for something that overclocks to a nice speed, and going all out on RAM and GFX

Basically my m8 has a 3800+ X2, 2GB of Corsair XMS3200C2PT TwinX, X1800 XT, 10k RAPTOR, Asus MVP-Delux i think it is, and it runs a nice 7.8k on 3dMark, so if i can top that with usin a better GFX and overclocking then im happy, I considered getting a X1900 GT ICEQ for the more Pixels it has over the X1800 models. Plus is there anythin you could suggest that might give a better FPS on Mir, i hardly play it but when i do i want a nice FPS for pvp:P, i think that would run about 300FPS but i havent tested my m8's system on Mir yet, i know the whole PC tweaking thing but my m8 wont let me test it on his comp. lol. Cheers

Ok i was looking to spend about 500 - 600 on CPU/Mboard/RAM/GFX/Cooler ihave been looking into the Conroe and i suppose i wouldnt mind if it could give me a better CPU beef than the other CPU's i posted, and overclocks better than them and stable enough.

Cheers

I have been looking into overclocking the lowest Core 2 Itel chip - 6300 and it seems to overclock to roughly (2.5GHZ) and outperforms the FX-62 on benchmark test, canyou confirm this for me?

If you push that E6300 far enough, I have no doubt in my mind it'll whip the FX-62.

Exactly what AMD are trying to achieve with AM2, and pushing K8L back is entirely beyond me. They should've anticipated Intel would respond this way, given the track record with the Pentium-M.

--

HOWEVER. AMD's price cuts are nothing short of insane. I of course, refer to the AMD64 X2 Socket 939 processors, which have seen cuts of up to 50%.

Seen as you're going for max overclocking, I'd say the E6300 is your best bet. But in reality, these old Socket939 processors are piss-cheap, and don't perform _that_ badly, really.

Also, consider investing in a new power supply, just as a precaution. For all this talk of efficiency, clean power is still a good thing, especially with relatively high-end components. I'd recommend one of the lovely HiPer modular supplies (I have one atm), as they're lovely little demons.

--

Depending on the price of the E6300, I'm now considering getting an X2 instead of a Conroe, purely on price. (For _my_ next upgrade :P)

I got this setup off Aria.co.uk what is the best out of the 2, i have decided to go with the Core 2 Duo because i outperforms AMD up to 10/15% in some cases overclocked, and its fairly cheap for such a good performing CPU at 130ish quid, but could Urban put me together a setup that will overclock stable with either a x1900 GT or the ICEQ on and 1GB of dual channel ram plz :) ty
