Laptop is ****ed..

I came off need for speed and a box came up, i tried to get rid of it but it wouldn't go so i just shut down the computer. I tried to start it up again and i got this message;

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system3\hal.dll.
Please re-ionstall a copy of the above file.

I have no idea how to do that..Help?

im guessing thats a important file to run a computer, and if you cant access nothin on ur computer intill thats fixed, then id be thinkin bout reformating it, inless some brainy **** can prove me wrong and tell you were you can get a disk with what on, then that'd be what id do

Reinstall Windows, with 20 characters.

windows xp disk instead of reformatting go to recovery console and go from there m8 faster then a format and shud re-install the missing file m8

Cheers i'll try that, it seems more minimal.

EDIT:Ok tried that, didn't work so i found the file on the xp disk, then tried to start up and it happened again with a different file, it happened again, fixed then happened again, put the file back but didn't work.

So i'm just going to partition move files across and reinstall windows..
