im buying a new computer, for the main reason my motherboard is too old, and my computers starting to get slow on the new games.

im getting a shuttle box. but i cant afford top processor and ram and gfx atm. and tbh i never can keep enough money saved up to get everything at once.

so basically, i need a cheap processor, cheap ram, and a gfx card, enough to do the basics and run vista business.

for the proccessor i need intel socket 775
for the ram i need DDR II SDRAM
for the gfx it needs to be PCI or PCI-E

cheapest you can find to run what i said wld b great.

no real budget. as im not sure on the minimum price it wld cost.

what wld u say wld b the lowest processor i cld have? and minimum ram to run vista on?

like i said, ill only use these till i can afford to upgrade to better specs.

something like £50 wld b nice (i did say £100 at first, but then took a look at some of overclockers prices). the box itself is costing me £300.

The Goal here is to get a machine which is not Bleeding edge but again not something you will want to replace anytime soon, so on this with no Budget to go on, here is my Views:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz (Retail 775) - £100

OCZ 2GB PC2-7200 Special Ops (2x1GB) - £32

nVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB PCI-E - £47

So we have a Total there of say £180 which will get you a Decent enough graphics Card to run most games, enough Ram for Vista and a Fast Dual Core CPU...

N.B. Nice Thread - go Purple Monkeys - shame about that Orange Geezer..

my current spec is

pentium4 3.0ghz
2gb ram
ati 9600 512mb (gainward)

and i can run anything, just annoyed me coz i had to turn the res on gears of war down to 1024 so it was smoother.

You did mention a Shuttle Case, which means anything over the 7600GT will need a more powerful PSU which is limited in the Shuttle anyhow. I run all my Games @ 1680x1050 which is the Native Res of my Monitor though there is newer games such as Crysis which will buckle on that card once you start upping the Res. and settings. I play COD4 fine at my stated Res and as I do not own GoW for the PC Yet, I cannot tell you how it will play.

The 7600GT is not a new card but Bangs for Bucks - personally I feel it will do he job. For example, what size Monitor do you have?? if its 17/19" then your going to be maxxed out anyhow on 1280x1024.

If you after playing the latest games at the highest res with everything switched on - then the Shuttle / 7600GT is not the Card for you - go and spend a LOT on 8800GT/X, a Beefy PowerSupply and so forth - all money vs performance.

Oh and I have a machine next to me with the ATI 9600 AGP in there and the 7600GT is MILES ahead of this.

ye its a 19" and my normal res is 1280x1024 on desktop and games.

tbh, 1280x1024 is high enough to put any of my games on, i dont think id ever need to go over that with this monitor.

yeah eventually i was hoping to save up for the 8800, and have read that it does require more power.

also, do you think its worth bothering going for a dual slot gfx card or just a waste of a pci slot (since i only have 2 lol).

Not sure how cheap you want to go but a few things ive found here:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-X1555E 512MB ATI Gfx card just over 30 quid.

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?GEL-BD642G 2GB Geil Black Dragon Ram for 43 quid.

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IL-E4500 Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2 x 2.2Ghz 2Mb Cache 800 FSB Dual Core Processor £83

There are other options on the site, some slightly cheaper some a bit more expensive (e.g the cpu could be a 2 x 2.0Ghz but would cost less than a fiver less than the above cpu so would just pay that little bit extra for a bit more performance.)
