Tutorial Need help downloading everything to play a server

As the title suggests i need help with how to set everything up to begin playing a server , i played mir many moons ago and i am familiar with downloading the files etc ,but i assume alot has changed in regards to what i need etc to get everything running ,any help is appreciated or even if somone can point me to a guided tutorial for what i need to do ,thanks ,much appreciated
