You can pick XP up for less than £20 now-a-days.

you can still use Automatic Update from control panel.

make sure you don't choose the first option.

Yes, use custom installation and take out anything with

"Windows Genine Advantage" in the name.

Windows Update is always the best in terms of getting updates because it connects directly to the microsoft update site without going through any other companies network.

all the copies of windows i have say "invalid cd-key" but yet they allow automatic updates lol

Buy a legal copy. I have one legal copy, that i use on all my machines, yes the EULA says no, but **** off if they expect me to pay £100 for each machine.

I did but it seems to have stopped working for me It wouldn't download.

You can "crack" your Windows as such to read as Genuine, and I've found that if you get a copied version of XP Pro SP2 for instance and use a legit XP Pro SP2 key, it works.
