Both companies cheapest dual core offerings:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86 GHz Dual Core 2MB Shared Cache $183 USD
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0 GHz Dual Core 2x512KB Split Cache $169 USD
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Price difference is roughly $14 USD, or £8. Price's will probably be different for Europe, but the difference again, should not be big.
Performance wise, the E6300 WIPES THE FLOOR with the X2 3800+ in ANYTHING you throw at.
In most cases, the E6300 is at AMD X2 4200+ ($240 USD) performance.
In GAMING, it is it is at AMD X2 4600+ ($300 USD) performance. RARELY, it is at AMD X2 5000+ ($400 USD) performance.
When it comes to memory latency, Intel's new line is about 15% faster than AMD. Yes, faster than AMD even though their CPU's have an on-die memory controller.
The E6300 also consumes LESS power than the whole X2 line.
I AM NOT INTEL BIASED. These are REAL numbers. For the last 3 odd years I have personally bought NOTHING but AMD. Was that because I was an AMD fanboy? NO, they were just the best performers at the time. Now, Intel takes back the crown.
It is STUPID to buy AM2.
