I just think that the people who are slating the server must either feel a bit intimidated by it or have never actually tried it.
It is definitely not a care bear server and is nothing like MR. I played MR for a while but left like many others because of the constant PK and grief. DR was like a breath of fresh air when I started playing 8 months ago, and although it has had its fair share of teething problems, it still is a fantastic server with many unique features.
Many of us subscribe to the server because Paul is basically on call 24/7 to sort out any issues, and is the most committed server owner I have ever seen. Subscription is totally optional and most tend to do it because they appreciate the game and wish to support it.
A lot of people play DR who don't like grief and come on for the crack. It is quite a friendly server, and while we do all argue and fight, I would not say there is many grudges held.
It does need an influx of players but seems to be picking up new people daily. It is good for new players as there is some good kit available and most guilds will help people get kitted and levelled up. I think it all depends on how you ask for help though. A few noobs made accounts, came to BWSZ and started shouting "give me gold and kit, then lvl me" , no effort to look around the game or do anything for themselves.
I don't want to slate or speak bad of the other servers that I have played ( OldSkool & MR ) as they are both decent servers that serve a purpose and have there place, but many of us have left these servers to join DR because it is different, as Paul said, not everyone is into mindless PK and many of us have grown up from the "GF & CRY GOOD" days and just enjoy this well run, stable server with many many genuinely nice decent players.
All I can say is " don't knock it till you try it "
