Hey guys. So I bought a new processor for my computer (which I thought was AM2 socket). But as I tried to replace my processor my old processors pins got bent, and I came to realise that my new one doesnt fit.

This is where im confused... on the socket in my computer it says "socket AM2" ... but when I looked up my current processors specs it says its AM2+ / AM3. Now im too scared to order an AM3 just incase it doesnt work, but I googles AM3 chips and sockets and the pin shapes look exactly like my computers. Heres a page I found of my exact processor - http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Sempron 140 - SDX140HBK13GQ (SDX140HBGQBOX).html . and my pins definately look like this - http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=am...Q&biw=1366&bih=667&sei=Rq9IUP_QBaKh0QWp3YGgAw

So why does it say AM2 on my motherboard? :/ so confused! If anyone could spread some ligh in my direction or maybe eve link me a decent cheap ish processor to buy that would be sooo much help! I'mk currently without computer because none of my chips will go back in my computer :(

Thanks in advance ! x

What's your motherboard and what's the cpu you wanna put in it. Some am2+ mobos can run am2 cpus but i don't think am2+ cpus can be run in am2 mobos.

I've established that the socket for the processor is definately AM3... But why does it say AM2 on the mother board. So confusing :/
If I got a processor that was too good for the motherboard would it be bad for the computer, or would it just not use the processor to its fullest potential?
