OS on external hdd?

may sound like a silly question but can you install an operating system to an external hard drive

you could do i suppose, but ude have to make the external HDD to first boot source, otherwise it would either load up the normal OS, or non at all if there wasnt anything on the main harddrive.

also id expect it might b abit twitchy, since transferring data through USB is never perfect.

you can get portable xp (and vista i think too) which will fit on something like a pen drive.

OS can be booted from and external device, wether it be a hard drive or a flash drive. The issue you will have though is getting it to actually boot from that device as there are some known issues with XP that can cause this.

ye you can boot from a usb pen drive, depends if your bios/motherboard supports it though
