I've had my licence for over 3 years. now being 21, last I checked for insurance my quotes where still around the 2-3k mark, which funnily enough is what they were when I was 17 too. And that's with trying named drivers/diff main drivers/lieing a little etc. lol

So info on this may prove useful for me too. also maybe a list of some cheap cars to insure?

What car is it? I never passed my test, but am hoping to pass it in the next couple of months and then getting a BMW 3 series straight away. As a brand new driver (albeit 23 years old) on a 320 was like 3.5k. It must be a pretty decent car to be 5k, if he can't afford it he should probably just wait until he gets at least 1 year no claims. If you don't factor in tax, insurance and petrol to your car purchase then you're just going to get stung for a lot of cash, if 2k a year is gonna tip him over the edge it's probably not worth it.

I'm looking at getting a Toyota Yaris, of which I can insure for £900 fully comp, £500 excess though.

Third party is the same, but you don't build up no claims if you're third party!

Not the coolest of cars, but it's cheap to run and insure!

I've still not passed my car test, but for me as a learner at 21 is £860, with 3 points, that's the main reason i don't see a point in driving a car at all, it's to expensive nowadays, my motorbike to insure, Suzuki Gsxr 600, with £1800 carbon wheels on the insurance, is around £130 with 5 years no claims, should have got a motorbike so much cheaper :p

£860 for a 21 yr old with 3 points is not expensive lol

until you compare it to bike insurance, which is significantly cheaper. This is why I originally got a bike. But they aren't the most practical of vehicles. despite being able to whiz past traffic jams.

and freeze ur ass off in the winter lol!

I am paying far too much on the BM for a 25 yr old but thats cos my area sucks, if I could insure it at the ball and chains it drops to 800 odd :(

My old bike, took the engin out, put a 400 in it, then put the arrow exhaust system on (which later decided to fail on me :( )
was a lovely bike, before it came to it's crushing end
