What is the best one you can get like an all-rounder, recording Desktop / Games ect..

you will need another program to compress the files after as they can get quite large depending on the quality you want.

oh and its not free, but that doesn't really stop people these days does it..

another one you can use for games, not sure about desktop is xfire which is free.

i did have another one, which you could select an area of your screen to record from only, but i forget the name. - edit - Hypercam thats it. - http://www.hyperionics.com/

Fraps is the best in my opinion; you can get the cracked version on any torrent site, if that's what you're into. *wink* and there are free conpression tools on download.com or use Windows Video Maker, it's cheap but effective.
