There are two for me.

  1. Wifi6
  2. wireguard cpu power
I will elaborate on the second. I use the router to connect to my vpns and route it via that. I also use merlins custom firmware. There are two primary vpns used by the average person, openvpn and wireguard. Openvpn only runs via a single core and thus the vpn speed is determined on the single cores processing power, now this is where the problem lays. Let us say we have an old single core router, using a vpn via the router to direct traffic, under no circumstances are we going to get max speed. To counter this, wireguard comes into play. It utilizes all the cores, operates faster and is much more streamlined. VPN is an encrypted traffic system, it uses processing power, limitations in terms of core usage and processing power nulify it.

When in doubt, wireguard.

Cheers.

Here are some basics of how the system operates.

Not too complicated. VPN client is what connects, I use wireguard, i then can choose vpn director to direct the flow of traffic. You can have multiple clients (connections to vpns) that allows multiple routes (tv vpn 1, laptop vpn 2). Do i think it is worth the money? yes. If you operate as I do and want to just stay ahead , then this is more optimal as it is all condensed. Firmware is here for the latest revision: https://sourceforge.net/projects/asuswrt-merlin/files/RT-AX86U_PRO/Release/

i also use a custom dns filter (pihole) via the dietpi os on my server. You don't need a pi to run it , im using a virtualised system locally to manage it all. If you do want uber internet, filtration, I would recommend pihole. You set your dns servers to point to the dietpi build ip and it'll filter traffic.

as you can see, 36% of all my in house traffic is being blocked. This includes telemetry, trackers, ads and anything i deem bad. One thing I should note, pihole can use unbound to enhance privacy or you can just use a third party dns server between such as CF or Google. Tutorial: https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/dns/unbound/ Currently i am lazy using CF as my upstream server.

Anytime. I recommend all lomcn nerds use pihole immediately. Oh I also note I use pihole also for my local domains, hence the pihole.lan. it is easier than remembering all the IPS. It can also act as your dhcp server (assigns IPS to clients) also but I dont.

Starlink is **** atm..too many factors that can screw u (u need to see if ur location is covered by them, then make sure u set up ur dish so it gets good satellite network visibility, etc.). Maybe in 10 years it can get close to fibre speed...

This is absolute BS, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about nor have you ever used the service.

Is Starlink as good as fibre to the property? Absolutely not, if you have fibre available then you wouldn't ever consider Starlink as that is not what it is for.

Starlink is designed to cover vast distances and offer an alternative to people with only copper available. I for one love the service provided by Starlink, I have a max of 15 meg available via copper with no future of fibre at the moment. With Starlink I get a consistent 200 meg, ping is in the low 20s so not perfect but its to be expected, it's the nature of having your internet provided by satellites.

In regards to your comment about the dish setup and network coverage, you literally can stick the dish on a pole and attach to your house, simple! As far as I'm aware, the entire UK is completely covered by starlink, no idea where you are located. Judging from your speed test it looks like you're in Romania?

max of 15Mbs lucky boy! My brother tried to play Fornite on 2-3Mb/s 🤣

I know 2 people with Starlink and both have not complained once since having it. Both in rural situations where providers just aren't worried/interested in investment of network for minimal reward.
